The Blessing of the Water
The Priest
pours ordinary oil on the baptismal water in the sign of the cross.
He says a
silent prayer for the person to be baptized, followed by the prayer of
thanksgiving and raising of incense.
The
appropriate Bible readings follow: the Pauline epistle
(Titus 2:11-3:8), the Catholic
epistle (1 Jn 5:5-14), the Acts
8:26-40, the trisagion (Agios), the litany of the Gospel, the Psalm
(Psa 32:1-2) then the Gospel
(Jn 3:1-21).
The Priest
then prays more litanies; a special prayer while laying his hand on the
person, announcing the lifetime blessings of baptism; and a preparatory
prayer for himself in front of the baptismal font. The creed is then
recited.
The Priest
pours Ghalliloun Oil (prepared from remains of making Myron Oil) on
the water in the sign of the cross.
He breathes
on the water three times, praying for its sanctification; then draws the
sign of the cross three times.
The Priest
pours Myron Oil on the water in the sign of the cross while the
congregation prays the Lord’s prayer.
The Priest
stirs the water with his cross as he prays more psalms.
(Psa 29:3-4, 34:11, 66:12, 51:7, 9-10, 132:13)
